US rare Liberty head V nickels
for coin collectors and buyers

The “V” nickel, also called the Liberty head nickel, was introduced by the United States mint to replace the shield nickel in 1883; like its predecessor, the five-cent Liberty head nickel was made of 3/4 copper and 1/4 nickel.

The “V” nickel appellation gets its name from the coin’s reverse, which featured a large V inside a wreath with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM written around the outside. The obverse gives the nickel its other name, showing the head of the allegorical figure Liberty who had featured on the majority of US coins at the time in various guises.

There are quite a few interesting Liberty head “V” nickel collectible coins available to buy from various vendors. Check the listings for what is available now. Listings updated each day. The Liberty head nickel was replaced in 1913 by the famous buffalo nickel.
