Armenia used Russian stamps from the middle of the 19th century; in 1902, they began adding overprints to these Russian stamps especially for Armenian use. These overprinted Russian stamps are generally considered the first specifically Armenian postage stamps by collectors.
Armenia became an autonomous state in 1918; its first stamps continued the tradition of overprinting Russian stamps, however (in 1919). Finally, from 1920 until 1922, Armenia issued its own stamps. Many of these early Armenian stamps are valuable but won’t break the bank of most collectors. In 1923, Armenia (along with Azerbaijan and Georgia) began using the stamps of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, but these were immediately discontinued in favor of Russian stamps, which Armenia (as a Soviet Socialist Republic) used until 1991.
