From 1920 until 1922, the Armenia Soviet Socialist Republic briefly issued its own stamps; before this time, Armenia used Russian stamps with overprints. In 1923, Armenia began using Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic stamps, and then Russian stamps, before gaining independence in 1991 and resuming its own stamp issuance in 1992.
The Armenia stamps of 1920 to 1922 feature some intricate designs, and symbols both of Russia (for example, a hammer and sickle) and Armenia (Mt. Ararat, for example). Armenian stamps from this era were in kopecks and roubles. For collectors of different writing systems, these issues used the unique Armenian alphabet. Some stamps feature various overprints.
