Wenden is a city in Livonia, an area on the Baltic Sea that was part of the Russian Empire during the nineteenth century; stamps were issued for Wenden from 1862 until 1901. The Livonia area is now part of Latvia and Estonia; the city of Wenden, now called Cēsis, is in Latvia.
The first Wenden stamps had a simple design: a blue circle inside which was the German inscription WENDENsche [sic] KREIS BRIEF POST. (including the final period). Subsequent stamps were more lavishly designed, and were inscribed Briefmarke Wendenschen Kreises. Wenden’s final postage stamps, in 1901, were inscribed in Russian (ВЕНДЕНСКАЯ УЕЗДНАЯ ПОЧТА) and depicted Wenden Castle.
