Venezia Giulia is the Italian name of an area in modern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. The area included the city of Trieste, where postage stamps were issued. In 1918, Venezia Giulia (English: Julian March; German: Julisch Venetien) was part of Austria; Italy occupied the area that year and took over postage.
Stamps used in Venezia Giulia by the occupying Italian forces in 1918-1919 were Austrian stamps with overprints reading ‘Regno d’Italia / Venezia Giulia / 3. XI. 18.’ (meaning November 3, 1918). Quickly, these were replaced by Italian stamps with a simpler overprint: ‘Venezia / Giulia’. Surcharges were added to these latter stamps eventually.
