When the British colony of Burma began overprinting “Indian Postage” stamps with ‘BURMA’ in 1937, it also overprinted some with ‘BURMA SERVICE’ for official use. These, like the regular-use stamps of 1937, are very collectible these days.
In 1938, Burma had its very own stamps issued for the first time. Britain overprinted these, too, for official use, using ‘SERVICE’. The Burmese stamps of this era had values in pies, annas, and rupees, as did Indian stamps. Later official Burmese stamps, after World War II, used Burmese overprints — for example, ကြားဖြတ် အစိုးရ။, meaning “interim government”, in addition to the english ‘SERVICE’ in 1946.
