The colony of Spanish Guinea, now called Equatorial Guinea, issued stamps as far back as 1868 for the island of Fernando Poo, though the colony proper wasn’t established until 1926. From 1926 until 1959, Spanish Guinea (in Spanish, Guinea Española) continued to issue stamps that are still very interesting — that is to say, highly collectible!
The official, full name of the colony was the Spanish Territories of the Gulf of Guinea (in Spanish, Territorios Españoles del Golfo de Guinea) — “Spanish Guinea” (or “Guinea Española”) is the much more common, colloquial term. The stamps from this era include regular Spanish stamps overprinted for the colonies, and (more commonly) stamps actually inscribed especially for the territories. Spanish Guinean stamps have either ‘GUINEA ESPAÑOLA’ or the full name on their inscription or overprints. In addition to the island of Fernando Poo, Spanish Guinea consisted of Río Muni as well as the group of islands known collectively as Elobey, Annobón and Corisco.
