The large copper cent coin minted by the United States from 1793 to 1796 is known among collectors as the flowing hair cent, or the Liberty cap cent. After the public disliked the designs of the earlier chain cent and wreath cent coins, both from 1793, this new coin featured an allegorical representation of Liberty, her hair and cap flowing behind her. The reverse kept the wreath and had the words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA outside it, plus ONE CENT inside. The edge of early versions of this coin were designed but later versions were flat.
Collectors and buyers can find examples of the Liberty cap/flowing hair large cent for sale in the sales listings. Various conditions may be found at any given time, and modern replicas may appeal to some numismatists who enjoy studying the history of American coinage. Other early American coins with a similar “flowing hair” design include half-dimes, half-dollars, and dollar coins, all from the mid 1790s.
