The copper “braided hair” large one-cent coin of the United States was the last large cent issued before the introduction of smaller flying eagle one-cent coins in 1856. On this coin, Liberty has had her hair braided up into a bun, different than past designs such as the curly-haired classic head cent and the straight-haired coronet or matron head cent. The figure has retained her LIBERTY coronet from past designs. The braided hair penny was used between 1835 and 1857.
