Newfoundland and Labrador, on the Atlantic coast of Canada, has a longer and richer coin history than many other provinces, due to the fact that Newfoundland began issuing its own coinage in 1865 and continued to do so until becoming a province of Canada in 1949. Newfoundland and Labrador is the name of the province which includes the island of Newfoundland and the large mainland area of Labrador. The name was changed to its full form in 2001 from simply “Newfoundland”.
Proofs and highly-graded coins from Newfoundland are especially sought after by collectors, and there are often some great pieces for sale that are quite stunning. Newfoundland used a decimal system; the one cent coins were bronze and the others, up to two dollars, were silver.
