Although India‘s rupee, as well as many other coins in its lengthy history, have been traditionally made of silver, gold Indian coins exist from many different eras and are often the rarest and most collectible examples from the subcontinent.
From its earliest days of numismatic history, various empires and (later) sultanates have issued gold coins; a popular version is the gold mohur, a unit of currency issued in gold by several states and leaders over the centuries.
The days of the British Raj may include the most-sought after gold coins from India among collectors today. Proofs and uncirculated gold coins can command prices of hundreds or thousands of dollars, and are quite beautiful and revealing of history in their own right.
