Legendary Queen Victoria was the British monarch that ruled over the colony of Hong Kong when some of the most sought-after and collector-beloved coins ever seen in HK were issued. Silver coins and outmoded denominations are just some of the interesting numismatic goodies that change hands in the online coin marketplace these days from the Victorian era. Most coins of this time featured an image of Queen Victoria herself.
The first Hong Kong coins were issued in 1863, twenty-six years after Victoria became queen in 1837. The very first coins included some 1-mil coins, which were worth a tenth of a cent (1/1000 of a dollar) and were made of bronze. One mil coins were dropped after 1866, but other coins continued throughout Queen Victoria’s reign: 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents (at first, a half dollar) and one dollar.

Queen Victoria died in 1901, and her coins were immediately discontinued to make way for a new series of coins featuring the new monarch, King Edward VII.
