Hong Kong has issued special gold commemorative coins since 1975, in both the British colonial era and the modern Chinese SAR era. Gold Hong Kong coins are quite popular among collectors and investors with the means to concentrate on these higher-end collectibles. $10 gold Hong Kong coin (1994)
Hong Kong issued a special proof version of its 1993 $10 coin in 1994. This coin had 0.3750 gold in its outer ring, and 0.9170 gold in the center part. The regular version is numbered in the Krause coin catalog as KM #70; the gold version is KM #70a.
Royal visit gold $1000 Hong Kong coins (1975 and 1986)
Twice, Hong Kong saw special $1000 gold coins that commemorated a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II to the colony. The first, in 1975 (KM #38), was Hong Kong’s very first $1000 coin and its first gold coin, and would lead to a yearly series of such coins. The second (KM #57) followed in 1986.

Zodiac animals gold $1000 Hong Kong coins (1976-1987)
Special gold $1000 coins were issued for twelve years in a row from 1976 to 1987, honoring the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac as their year came. Each coin features Queen Elizabeth on the obverse, with a simple unadorned image of the animal on the reverse, which also shows the Chinese name of Hong Kong (香港, written right to left, opposite of how it is on this page).

Note that 1986 is the only year in which two different gold $1000 HK coins were issued (Year of the Tiger, plus Elizabeth II’s royal visit). The purity of all of the zodiac coins, as well as the two royal visit coins, is 0.9170.
Hong Kong SAR gold $1000 coins
In 1997, Hong Kong celebrated its return to China as a Special Administration Region with yet another $1000 gold coin, its first in ten years. This coin is KM #71; it was followed in 1998 by KM #79, another $1000 gold proof featuring Hong Kong International Airport.
Five Blessings set of five silver/gold coins, 2002
A series of five coins in 2002 featured the “Five Blessings” and were primarily made of silver, with gold plating in the center of each coin. These coins marked five years of Hong Kong’s being part of the People’s Republic of China, and shared a single obverse design with different subjects on the reverse: jade, fish, horses, flowers, and pinwheels. (These are numbered KM #80-84, respectively).
