Vanuatu, which was called New Hebrides until 1980, issued its first banknotes in 1982. Bills from Vanautu were inscribed on the obverse “CENTRAL BANK OF VANUATU” and “BANQUE CENTRALE DE VANUATU”; on the back, “CENTRAL BANK BLONG VANUATU”. From 1995 onwards, the word “CENTRAL” was replaced with “RESERVE”. The banknotes are denominated in the currency unit vatu.
