There are currently six different denominations of banknotes in use in Hong Kong, but there are sixteen different designs that paper money collectors can choose from. This is because there are four different issuers of banknotes for Hong Kong, and there is some overlap.
$10 Hong Kong banknotes
The lowest-face value note in Hong Kong is the $10, only issued by the Hong Kong government itself. The current design debuted in 2002, but was re-released in 2007 in polymer.
$20 through $1000 Hong Kong banknotes
The other five denominations of banknotes are each issued by three different banks, a total of fifteen designs to choose from. All are color-coded, and the current versions all debuted in 2010.
The denominations of these higher notes are $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1000. The issuing banks are Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Bank of China (BOC), and Standard Chartered Bank (SCB). These banks have issued notes for different lengths of time; HSBC and SCB both began in the mid-1800s while BOC only began in the 1990s. In the past, there were several other banknote-issuing banks, and this has created quite a large variety of interesting notes for collectors these days to concentrate on.
