US rare seated Liberty half
dollars for coin collectors

Seated Liberty half-dollars were the silver fifty-cent coins used in the United States from 1839 until 1891, and their commonly-used name refers to the design on the obverse of the coin: the figure of Liberty is seated on a rock, with a shield and a staff in either hand. The reverse showed an eagle, clutching a peace branch and arrows; in 1866 the legend IN GOD WE TRUST was added.

Seated Liberty half dollar coins replaced the capped bust half dollars and would be used for several decades before, during, and after the Civil War. In 1891, the seated Liberty design was scrapped in favor of the Barber half-dollar.
