Between Yugoslavia and the Euro

You can find a lot of interesting Bosnia and Herzegovina coins for your collection. This is despite the short period of time the Balkan country issued coins, after the breakup of Yugoslavia and before the adoption of the Euro. Bosnian coins are wonderful and can keep you very busy.

The first currency on Bosnia and Herzegovina coins was the dinara, which replaced the Yugoslavian dinar after the fall of Yugoslavia in 1992. However, Croats used their own Croatian kuna in areas they populated, and the Bosnian Serbs used their version of the dinar.

In 1995, an accord was signed that stipulated Bosnia and Herzegovina would have a new currency. In 1998, konvertibilna marka (a.k.a maraka, usually rendered convertible marka in English) was established. It was pegged to the Deutschmark. The marka were subdivided into 100 feniga, or feninga.

Several silver commemorative coins were produced in a variety of denominations. Gold Bosnia and Herzegovina coins were also issued, in face values of up to 10,000 dinara. By the mid 1990s, other currencies made their way onto Bosnia and Herzegovina coins, including the dukat, the suverena, and the ecu. These, too, were made using different metals including gold and silver. Gorgeous examples of these can be found and don’t have to break the bank for most collectors. If you like unusual denominations, consider such Bosnian coins as the “14 ecus + 2 ecus” coin.

Designs and languages on Bosnia and Herzegovina coins

Bosnia coins often included the phrase BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA . Some use the longer phrase REPUBLIKA BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA. Some coins, particularly the last konvertible marka pieces from the mid 2000s, may also sport the lower-case Cyrillic name of the country, Босна и Херцеговина.

Although they date from a short period of time, Bosnia and Herzegovina coins feature dozens of issues and an elegant, simple design. Many different subjects were featured on their designs. For these reasons, and for the variety of metals and currencies used, Bosnia coins offer quite a few great opportunities for collectors of European or world coins.
