Hey folks, Stanley the time-traveling coin collector is back with another wild tale for you all. So, I recently hopped back in my trusty time machine and headed to Angola in 1993 to add some coins to my collection.
Let me give you a bit of context here. I’m a collector from Canada, married to my lovely wife Harriet. I’ve been to a few nearby countries like Namibia, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo before, and managed to snag some coins from each. But Angola is always a bit of a challenge, ya know what I’m saying?
Anyway, so my time machine drops me off in the middle of nowhere, in a rural area. The structures were all basic and the roads were bumpy as hell. I had no clue where exactly in Angola I was, but that’s all part of the thrill, right?

After wandering around and asking a few locals, I finally figured out that I was in the town of Caxito. Angola was still in the midst of a long civil war, so things were pretty rough around the edges. I had to be discreet and careful. But I didn’t let that stop me from my coin-collecting mission.
I decided to whip out my guitar and play a few tunes on the street. People were naturally curious, so before I knew it, I had a little crowd gathered around me. One dude was really into my music and ended up giving me a few coins as a thank you. Score! I even managed to find a few rare coins in the mix.

Once I’d collected what I came for, it was time to figure out what to do with them. I kept a few for my personal collection, sold some on eBay, gave some to a buddy, and even auctioned off a few on the site too. The prices varied, but I made a pretty penny overall.
So there you have it, folks. My trip to Angola in ’93 was certainly an adventure, to say the least. If you’re a collector, I definitely recommend seeking out coins from Angola. They’re a real slice of the country’s history.
