The emergence of punk rock in the mid-70s also coincided with the zenith of the 8-track tape. At that time, all major label releases were out on both LP and 8-track tape. This explains why such 'minor' artists at the time (but legends now) such as the Sex Pistols, Ramones, New York Dolls, Iggy & The Stooges, The Jam, Dead Boys, The Clash, The Stranglers, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello and Talking Heads had all of their releases in the 70s make it onto 8-track tape in the USA. Given the relatively smaller sales however (especially when compared to the Eagles, Peter Frampton or the Bee Gees), considerably less of these carts were manufactured, making these items much harder to find today.

As the decade came to a close and punk gave way to 'new wave', the 8-track was losing share to the cassette. This made availability of significant alternative artists at the time on the format to be tough finds indeed. While groups such as Blondie, The Police, Devo & The Knack had plenty of product available, finding Squeeze, Ultravox, Gary Numan, The Specials, Kraftwerk, Lene Lovich or The Records on 8-track tape is not so easy.

So where can you go to find this stuff? Your local thrift store? Maybe 15 years ago; not likely now. Save yourself some time and search right here at Mega Ministore.
