Kenya's modern currency began in 1966 with the adoption of the Kenyan shilling; before this time the country was a British colony and used the East African Shilling. (Before that, the area's currency was the Florin, and before that the Indian Rupee.)

Kenyan leader Jomo Kenyatta and his image on a 200-shilling banknote
With Kenya's independence in 1966, the nation began a tradition of low-key banknotes; for its first 13 years every banknote featured an image of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, legendary leader of Kenya. In 1980, new notes in Kenya featured new leader Daniel arap Moi; in 2003, Kenyatta notes were re-introduced. These were largely comprised of bills that had been printed for the 1978 series, but had been stored by the government in the intervening years.
Kenyan shilling banknote denominations currently are 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 shillings, as well as outdated 10 and 20 shilling notes.
Buying Kenyan banknotes is easily done; the notes' short history and the interest that African nations hold for international paper money collectors mean that there is always a good selection available.
