Amish Quilts and Quilting Supplies
In the late 1700's, a group of immigrants from Germany and Switzerland settled in Lancaster County Pennsylvania in the new frontier called America, seeking a place to freely practice their Christian religion. Their unique way of life was and still is reflected in the work they do, from farming to woodcrafts to quilting.
The Amish are a people dedicated to frugality, simplicity, and excellent home-life skills. Their communities, even today, seem to thrive without the benefit of electricity, cars, or other conveniences most of the world claims. They are called "the Plain People."
Amish quilts have, from the beginning, been a natural reflection of the Amish life. The women still make all their family's clothing using only solid-colored fabric - no prints. Browns and deep blues are a favorite for women and children, and they are featured routinely in their quilts. The men wear black and white. Amish quilts made from left-over and collected scraps of these same fabrics are expertly pieced together in bold blocks, stripes, and clean-line geometrics, usually anchored by deep blacks.
Hand-stitching on Amish quilts is often the most beautiful feature of these prized coverings. The solid fabrics naturally bring out the intricate and carefully-crafted patterns and designs so that, against deep blacks and shadowed solids, the result is striking.
Because the Amish women of today still make quilts in the tradition in which they have always made them, Amish quilts are more popular than ever. We love their simple beauty and their timeless design; and perhaps more importantly, we love to feel a connection with the simple lives of the "plain people" who make them.
