By the early '80's, 8-track tapes we no longer being produced for sale in record or department stores by the major record labels. However, the Columbia and RCA record clubs continued to offer 8 tracks until 1988. This explains how you can find 8-track tapes of such stars of the 80's as Madonna, Prince, U2, The Miami Sound Machine, Huey Lewis, Thompson Twins, A Flock of Seagulls, Sade, Quiet Riot, etc.
The 8-track tape ascended to the level of a true collectible in the mid-90's with the emergence of the fanzine 8-Track Mind, documentary So Wrong They're Right, and the internet (eBay & 8-Track Heaven among others) making the worldwide selling and trading of the cartridges even more prolific. This continues today as CD's & cassettes are now the discarded media and have replaced 8-tracks in the thrift stores and flea markets of the nation.
