Strawberry Alarm Clock Discography 1966-1998

This list includes known mainstream releases by Strawberry Alarm Clock, including early singles by Thee Sixpence and the band's various compilation albums. Excluded are foreign-language/international releases and various artists-type compilations that contain no unique SAC songs ("Incense And Peppermints", and to a lesser degree, "Tomorrow", have appeared on countless 60s comps).

This discography can be used to make sure you get everything possible from Strawberry Alarm Clock. Basically, you need the four original albums (the Japanese CD version of Good Morning Starshine being one of them), Step By Step by Thee Sixpence, and the Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls soundtrack for the one song there unavailable elsewhere.

Note that Strawberry Alarm Clock have been slow to make their original songs available for MP3 download outside of a few compilations. Finding CD and LP copies of all their albums is not too hard though.

Notes:
This is the original 1967 release. An early 90s compilation with a similar but noticeably different cover was also called Incense & Peppermints, confusing things for collectors and fans alike. To look for this actual album make sure it has the cover art shown here.

Curiously, for an album recorded on the back of such a huge hit single, no other singles were released from the album, despite some fantastic songs like "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" and "Paxton's Back Street Carnival".

Notes:
More varied and definitely weirder than Incense And Peppermints, SAC's second album is a classic that contains several of the best tracks of the group's career.

Note that the cover art was also used for a 1993 anthology of SAC. Be sure you're getting the right album when buying this. (The 1993 comp shrinks the cover down to fit black text on a white border around the outside.)

There are two songs performed by Strawberry Alarm Clock on this soundtrack album, both of them taken from Incense And Peppermints. "The World's On Fire [long version]" is the same one that opens SAC's 1st album; the other is a three-minute chunk from the middle of it.

The recording of "Pretty Song From Psych-Out" is very similar to SAC's version (available on their second album), but is actually by a group called The Storybook.

Japanese bonus tracks:
Desireé  -  I Climbed The Mountain  -  Three  -  Starting Out The Day  -  California Day  -  Girl From The City

Notes:
The final full-length LP by SAC. The 1997 Japanese release is by far the recommended version, since it collects all of the non-LP songs from the singles released after the album.

Notes:
The first SAC compilation. Often listed as having two otherwise unavailable tracks, but this is apparently a reference to the last two songs ("Desireé" and "Starting Out The Day"), which were both released on 45rpm singles and are now available on the Japanese bonus track version of the Good Morning Starshine CD.

Notes:
Annoyingly titled the same as Strawberry Alarm Clock's 1st LP with the same cover photo (but obviously different cover art). Decent introduction to the band, but not the best.

There is an alternate cover from a 2004 issue featuring the same band photograph with a garish multicolor swirl and latter-day pseudo-psychedelic lettering above it.

Notes:
Yet another compilation with the same band photo confusingly imported from Strawberry Alarm Clock's 1967 debut LP. Pretty good track listing though, and the generally-available CD now available has 8 songs not on the original release including some of the latter-day single-only SAC songs. If you're not enough of a fan to just get all the original albums, this is the compilation for you.

This has four of SAC's non-LP songs, lacking "Starting Out The Day" and "Girl From The City", which are on the Japanese CD version of Good Morning Starshine, and "I'm Coming Home" which is on the Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls soundtrack.

Notes:
Complete album of all known Thee Sixpence singles. The band released six singles that represented 10 (not 12) different songs. Note that these include the well-known "Incense And Peppermints" and "The Birdman Of Alkatrash" -- this album includes those as well as "The World's On Fire" from SAC's first album, so besides those three songs this album has 8 songs that are definitely necessary for any SAC fan.

Released on vinyl; there seems to be a CD version but it's not clear how official it is. Akarma has been known to press CDs directly from vinyl or tape sources without digital processing. Whatever the case here, for Strawberry Alarm Clock fans this album is a necessity and sounds fine to us.
