The Seeds & Sky Saxon Discography 1960-2009
This discography covers releases from Sky Saxon's earliest recordings as Dick Marsh through The Seeds' releases, Sky Sunlight Saxon's 70s and 80s work with members of Ya Ho Wha 13, the Source Family, Mars Bonfire, etc; to his 90s and 2000s bands and various guest appearances.There are a few Sky Saxon discographies on the net, but they are all incomplete, many contain huge errors, and none is fully illustrated. Many errors and inconsistencies get copied to various sites and blogs; our aim here is to present things as they really are and clear up the confusion. (As an example, Sky Saxon's pre-Seeds releases are listed under various names, spellings, labels and years on other sites.) A truly 100% complete Sky Saxon discography remains elusive, but this page gets us much closer. (There are likely errors even on this page, particularly with the date of release of Sky's six pre-Seeds singles.)
Singles are only listed if they contained a non-LP or otherwise exclusive track at the time of release; the point is to help Sky Saxon fans hear everything, not get every variation of every release. Compilations are obviously an easier place to find scattered singles and things, so those are mentioned where possible.
Some Sky Saxon releases are unbelievably hard to find, but you can click the links under each item to try your luck with various vendors. CD, vinyl and MP3 links are provided where possible. These links are updated frequently throughout the day, so check back daily or so if there is something you're really looking for.

Sky Saxon's first single, released under a variation of his real name, Richard Marsh. Aside from the rare original 7" single, these two tracks are only available on the 2003 vinyl LP compilation from Norton Records called Sky Saxon Presents A Starlight Date With Richard Marsh, which is therefore the only compilation that includes every known pre-Seeds Sky Saxon release.
Sources differ as to the release date of this single; it was almost certainly between 1959 and 1961, probably 1960.

This album has the psychedelia toned way down as The Seeds (under a different name) play rough and grungy versions of songs in a straight blues style. Controversial among Seeds fans for being such an anomaly in the Seeds' catalog, this album's performances still are fun to listen to as Sky's vocals are warped and adenoidal as ever, and the band's looseness gives the songs a compelling texture.
Available on a single CD with the Seeds album Future. [Note that Amazon mistakenly titles the CD Future/A Full Spoon Of Speedy Blues.] The 2-on-1 CD is not available for download from Amazon, though the CD itself can be found for quite cheap, especially used, from many vendors.

Famous for having great performances, some otherwise unavailable songs, and fake ecstatic crowd noises added later. Whatever the case, this peculiar 'live' album is as necessary as anything else in the Seeds' official ouvre.
Available on a single CD with Rare Seeds, a self-explanatory collection of tracks from the vaults. (Also released in 1991 as a 2LP-on-1-CD disc with the mysterious Fire Escape album from 1967, which featured a Sky Saxon soundalike doing psych-garage punk numbers including several Seeds songs.)
Note that some sources refer to the Rare Seeds part of the Raw & Alive CD as an original 60s album, even though there was no single album called Rare Seeds. Two of the tracks from this album have been released with the crowd noises removed.

This was re-pressed in 1976, though "Diamonds In The Rough" was there retitled "Beautiful Stars". That re-release is much easier to find, but if you find this one for sale, go for it; the recordings do differ slightly from the re-release. A privately-pressed LP on red vinyl. Sold in health food and through magazine ads, but never re-released. Despite the 'track listing' on both sides of the record, Lovers Cosmic Voyage actually consists of two tracks (one five minutes, the other nine) featuring Sky Saxon playing apparently random piano (unconventionally, but not unskillfully) and singing softly. (The sides are labeled 'Side A' and 'Side Z'.) There may be different parts to the performances that correspond to the supposed song titles, but given the loose, free nature of the performances, it's awfully hard to tell where they might be. The labels say "Live album" but that apparently refers to a lack of overdubs, not an audience.
The music is very different than everything else Sky ever did: Lovers Cosmic Voyage can actually be played as you gently drift off to sleep. There is nothing harsh or garage-y about it; it's meandering and genuinely, hauntingly beautiful.
Unfortunately it's virtually unavailable now, rarely showing up even on eBay and never re-released. Part of the problem is that it had no cover, and the label credits it to "Sunlight", thus assuring that fans of either Sky Saxon or Ya Ho Wha 13 may well skip over it even if they did come across it somewhere.

Also included is a live version of "A Thousand Shadows" and a short on-air interview from The Joey Bishop Show, in unbelievably bad audio quality (sounds like someone held a cassette recorder up to a TV speaker).
Unlike Bad Part Of Town, New Fruit From Old Seeds includes both versions of the early Richie Marsh track "They Say". The album is titled Volume One but there never was a Volume Two, and anyway it's now out of print and rather hard to find.

Compilation of original Seeds recordings. Bypasses the most well-known hits in favor of deeper album cuts, so it's interesting in that respect, but not really necessary for most: if you cared about these tracks you'd just get all The Seeds' stuff.
However you can often find copies of this CD for pretty cheap, often under $10, and it is a musically fantastic collection. It would make a good companion to Evil Hoodoo, but there really is no reason to get this unless you're a completist.

Compilation, with some unreleased material and things previously available only on vinyl: the "Pretty Girl" remix is from 1977's Fallin' Off The Edge compilation LP, as is the 'rehearsal' version of "Pushin' Too Hard". The "Travel With Your Mind" and "A Thousand Shadows" remixes are new to this album. "900 Million People Daily (All Making Love)" is from Raw & Alive, presented in its longer, unedited version, with the crowd noises removed; "Satisfy You" is also presented without crowd noises (but is otherwise the same as the 'live' version). "Nobody Spoil My Fun" is an alternate take, and "Sad And Alone" is previously unreleased.
Other tracks on the album are all previously available, though this is still a good compilation to pick up. Not for the amusingly atrocious cover art, perhaps, but...

Pretty comprehensive box set of all five of The Seeds' original 60s albums (The Seeds, A Web Of Sound, Future, A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues, and Raw & Alive) plus a few of the rarities that had been released on subsequent compilations (especially Travel With Your Mind).
Not particularly easy to find these days, and generally not worth it since buying the three 2-on-1 CDs, especially used, would save a ton of money, but this is indeed an excellent set of Seeds music if you see one for cheap.

13-CD box set containing most (but not all) of the Source Family's 70s releases, under various names and spellings. Sky Saxon appears on CDs #10, 12, and 13.
CD #10 is the Golden Sunrise album that was released on 8-track tape in 1977.
CD #12 features some singles and EPs featuring Sky Saxon. All songs on this CD except "40 Days In The Desert" (not coincidentally the least interesting song, with Sky on backing vocals) feature Sky on lead vocals. Included are both songs from the 1976 "Beautiful Stars" 45; two of the four songs on the 1977 EP with "In Love With Life", and three other Sky Saxon songs. (NOTE: "Tired Of Bein' Poor" is listed on the CD case, but the song on the CD is actually "Drums, Stars & Guitars" originally released on 1984's Starry Ride EP.)
CD #13 contains unreleased recordings by Fire, Water, Air (of the Golden Sunrise album), though not all feature Sky, at least not singing; his voice can be heard on "To Deliver You" and "Sky Sunlight Saxon Speaking Directly To The Earth Aquarian Family" which is a mid/late 90s recording of Sky explaining the music and the Source Family. This box set, released by Sky Saxon and Japanese label Captain Trips, was only manufactured in limited numbers. Some of it is being re-released as a series of single discs (including vinyl versions).

Sky Saxon co-wrote and sings lead on two songs, "If I Had Some Marijuana" and "Build Yourself An Aero Plane", both of which are fantastic, making this album well worth picking up. Yesterday's Thoughts channel the real sound and spirit of 60s psych garage punk to an impressive-cum-eerie degree -- the perfect backdrop for Sky's reliably awesome performance.
Really two of the stronger performances in Sky's latter career. Released on CD and LP.

Notes:
"Halt!" was written in 1989 and recorded in 2007 as The Seeds; the flip side "Amnesty" was recorded by Sky Saxon and musicians collectively called Royal Family (a.k.a. The Royal Family Band Save The World) in 2008. This 7" was released after Sky's death in 2009. "Halt!" is also on the full-length album Back To The Garden.

Was supposed to be sold exclusively at venues for the California 66 tour, featuring a Johnny Echols-led Love with Baby Lemonade, Sky Sunlight Saxon, and The Electric Prunes. Now available via mail order through the Electric Prunes' website.
This CD contains two exclusive Sky Saxon tracks: a live version of "Pushin' Too Hard" from 1968 by The Seeds, and an unreleased Sky Saxon song from 2007 called "Just Like John Lennon Said". (Also included is a Seeds track from the 2008 Back To The Garden album, "Summer Of Love".)

Hi Sabrina, thanks for stopping by! I have included a link to the official SSS page. Nice re-design, it looks good.
This page is the result of a lot of research both online and in record shops. I don't actually own all of the above (yet), some of it being so hard to find that most Sky Saxon fans haven't heard them. But I have a lot of it, and all of it is great. I don't know many musicians who kept up that level of dedication and quality as long as Sky did. Truly amazing.
I do encourage everyone to check out http://www.skysaxon.com, there are a lot of interesting links and information pages there, as well as a section to purchase CDs and interesting stuff like mugs and T-shirts. And some news -- the Atlantic Rising album is going to be re-released in 2010 as an expanded 2CD set with extra music!
I got a note that Sky Saxon also produced an album by Jimmy Valentine called Pisces Rising. Since Sky apparently doesn't actually perform on the album it isn't included in the discography for now, but it may be of interest to some fans so I'm mentioning it here.

Great job, you've listed a lot of Sky stuff I was unaware of. Now if I could only get to hear all of it! There is however something you fofgot - Yodship, released sometime in the late 70's and available on the God and Hair Boxset. Sky is singing lead on this. There was also a privitely pressed 1-sided lp, called "In Praise of Our Father," it is basically Yodship Suite pt 3. Sky is again the lead singer. Both of these projects are great and worth listening to for the Sky Saxon / Yahowha fan.
